USCIS has updated the Form I-485, adjustment of status application, to allow permanent residence applicants to concurrently apply for an unrestricted social security card or a replacement social security card as a part of the green card application. After a foreign national’s green card application is approved, they are eligible for an SSN that permits them to work without restriction. Prior to approval, their SSNs could be valid for work only with DHS authorization, or in some cases, not valid for employment at all.
Previously, foreign nationals had to bring paperwork to the social security office in person to receive an SSN. Now, the form allows the applicant to apply for an SSN at the same time. USCIS’ Form I-765, application for employment authorization also allows concurrent SSN applications. The new Form I-485 is available for use starting from today and will become mandatory for applications starting on October 13, 2021. USCIS has stated that applicants should expect to receive their new SSN within 2 weeks of receiving the green card.
