The Biden administration recently announced that it will be reviewing the cases of Ukrainians who fled Ukraine right after the war started in 2022, but who entered before April of 2022 for consideration of an additional one-year extension of their parole status.

The Department of Homeland Security clarified that this extension is for certain Ukrainian nationals and their immediate family members who were let into the United States before the Uniting for Ukraine program started.

Entry on Humanitarian Parole is different than entry on Parole under the Uniting for Ukraine Program

Individuals that entered the U.S. under humanitarian parole were not given the same parole as Ukrainians who entered under parole status under the Uniting for Ukraine program. The Uniting for Ukraine program was started after the war in April of 2022 that implemented a specific application process apart from the standard humanitarian parole program to allow individuals with legal status in the United States to financially sponsor Ukrainian nationals that were fleeing from the war with Russia. The Uniting for Ukraine program granted parole status to Ukrainians for a period of two years while Ukrainians who entered on humanitarian parole were granted parole for one year. We discuss the Uniting for Ukraine program here.

Ukrainians who entered the United States under humanitarian parole before Uniting for Ukraine was implemented in April of 2022, were granted parole status for one year. This recent announcement was made to further help these Ukrainians who will have their parole status expiring in the next few months.
