If you are coming to the U.S. on a non-immigrant visa (e.g. a B-1 visa or B-2 visa), the general rule is that your passport must be valid for 6 months beyond the date you will exit the U.S. For example, if you are coming to the U.S. on a B-2 visa as a tourist to visit your family from January 1 to January 20, your passport should be valid at least 6 months after January 20.
Certain countries are exempt from the 6-month requirement and the citizens of these countries only need to have a passport that is valid for the intended period of stay. If you are a national of one of those countries, in the hypo above, you would have to show that your passport is valid until at least January 20.
