USCIS has announced that they will reuse previously submitted biometrics in order to process valid work permit application extension requests due to the closure of Application Support Centers (ASC). Biometrics appointments are appointments where the applicant’s fingerprints, photo, and information are taken. They are held in an applicant’s local USCIS field offices during normal work hours. Biometrics is required for all immigrant applications and most non-immigrant applications in the United States.

For some applications like asylum work permit application extensions, USCIS will require biometrics to be taken every time an extension application is submitted. For other applications like a work permit extension while waiting for adjustment of status, USCIS has already previously allowed the reuse of biometrics.

Applicants who had an appointment scheduled with an ASC on or after the March 18 closure or who have filed a work permit application will be their applications processed using previously submitted biometrics. This will allow applications to be processed normally as USCIS usually will not process applications until biometrics are taken.
