California’s Governor Gavin Newsom announced on April 15 that the State is granting undocumented immigrants access to the State’s $125 million disaster assistance program. Undocumented immigrants do not meet the criteria for state unemployment insurance or the stimulus checks the federal government will send to U.S. citizens and resident alien tax payers. Under the State’s disaster relief funds, each person in need to be given between $500 to $1000 per person. At this time, California is also allowing “presumptive eligibility” to medical benefits, meaning that all in the state, including those who are undocumented, can get tests and treatment for COVID-19 and be reimbursed.
