A group of Senators have introduced legislation in Congress that would allow 40,000 immigrant doctors and nurses to gain visas and work permits as a response to the COVID-19 pandemic. The proposal would reallocate a limited number of unused visas from prior years for doctors and nurses who are qualified. Medical professionals receiving consideration under the bill would be required to meet licensing requirements, pay filing fees, and clear national security and criminal background checks.

At this time this is just a bill that has been introduced to Congress. It is likely that it will be attached to any new round of COVID-19 legislation Congress will consider. Until it is passed in Congress, this has no actual impact on the current situation of visas for doctors and nurses.
