The Department of Homeland Security announced on October 21, 2022 that Ethiopia has been designated for Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for 18 months, from December 12, 2022 to June 12, 2024. The registration process will begin on December 12, 2022. TPS is granted to certain groups of people in the wake of natural disasters, wars, outbreaks of disease, and other catastrophes that would make it difficult for them to return safely to their home countries. Government officials periodically review the program to decide whether to extend it, and most groups have received regular extensions in the past. Please click here to learn more about TPS.

Individuals eligible for TPS under this designation must have continuously resided in the United States since October 20, 2022 and have been continuously physically present in the US since December 12, 2022. Individuals who attempt to travel to the United States after October 20, 2022, will not be eligible for TPS. Applicants may also apply for EADs and for travel authorization during this time by submitting the corresponding forms and fee(s) or fee waiver request. TPS applicants must meet all eligibility requirements and undergo security and background checks.
