The Department of Homeland Security announced on December 30, 2022 that Yemen has been designated for Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for 18 months from March 4, 2023 to September 3, 2024 due to the ongoing armed conflict and extraordinary conditions in Yemen. TPS is granted to certain groups of people in the wake of natural disasters, wars, outbreaks of disease, and other catastrophes that would make it difficult for them to return safely to their home countries. Government officials periodically review the program to decide whether to extend it, and most groups have received regular extensions in the past. Please click here to learn more about TPS.
Individuals eligible for TPS under this designation must have continuously resided in the United States since December 29, 2022 and have been continuously physically present in the US since March 3, 2023. Applicants may also apply for EADs and for travel authorization during this time by submitting the corresponding forms and fee(s) or fee waiver request, during the 18-month registration period. Initial applicants who have never possessed TPS status have a new filing window to file their initial applications between January 3, 2023, through September 3, 2024. Applicants who currently possess TPS status will be required to reregister their status during the reregistration filing period between January 3, 2023 – March 4, 2023. Furthermore, applicants who timely re-register will likely not receive a new employment authorization document before their current authorization expires on March 3, 2023. Therefore, expiring employment authorizations are extended through March 3, 2024 while a new authorization document is issued with the same expiration date. TPS applicants must meet all eligibility requirements and undergo security and background checks.
