Today, The United States Citizenship and Immigration Service, “USCIS” announced that effective September 26, 2022, green card validity dates are being extended for a period of 24 months after the date of expiration.
Not all green cards are eligible, however. Eligible green cards include green cards for legal permanent residents who properly filed their extension application, form I-90 with USCIS. We discuss the renewal process for green cards here.
USCIS reports that they are updating the language in I-90 receipt notices to notify of the extension of validity dates for 24 months for individuals who filed a new I-90 where the receipt notice in combination with an expired green card can be presented to demonstrate lawful permanent resident status.
The new policy is to help alleviate the long processing times for renewal applications. Individuals who may have lost their green card can also request an appointment at a USCIS field office to request an Alien Documentation Identification and Telecommunications “ADIT” stamp after the form I-90 is filed that can be presented as evidence of lawful permanent resident status.
