Scott Legal, P.C. is happy to share a recent TN port-of-entry approval for a Canadian citizen in the category of accountant. The applicant was granted the visa for 3 years to work in the role of Controller for a trucking company. The application was made at the Laurier Port of Entry in Washington.
The TN visa allows qualifying Canadian and Mexican professionals to work in the United States in occupations listed under the USMCA. Accountant is one of those occupations. Three years is the longest period TN status can be granted at one time, and it can be extended. To qualify, an applicant generally needs a baccalaureate or licenciatura degree, or a qualifying professional accounting license.
This approval also shows that the job title and the TN category do not have to be identical. The position here is Controller, and the application was made in the accountant category. What matters is whether the duties of the position fall within the profession and whether the applicant’s credentials support it.
Where you apply depends on your citizenship. TN applications for Canadian nationals can be adjudicated at a port of entry, so a Canadian applicant can present the application directly to U.S. Customs and Border Protection at a land crossing or airport. Mexican nationals applying for TN visas must do so at a U.S. Consulate or U.S. Embassy.
It is recommended to call the port of entry in advance. A quick call lets you confirm that the port can process your TN application on the day you plan to arrive.
