The E-2 visa allows nationals of countries that hold a qualifying treaty with the United States to live in the U.S. and direct a business there. Eligibility is based on citizenship, and Ireland is one of the treaty countries whose citizens qualify.
Five years is the longest E-2 visa available to an Irish national. How long a consulate can issue the visa for depends on the reciprocity arrangement between the United States and the applicant’s country, and the consular officer then decides how much of that period to grant. For Ireland, the reciprocity schedule allows E-2 visas of up to five years with multiple entries.
The validity of the visa is not the same as the length of each stay. An E-2 visa holder is generally admitted for up to two years on each entry and may travel in and out of the United States while the visa remains valid.
An E-2 visa can be renewed for as long as the business continues to meet the requirements, which allows the category to support a U.S. company over many years.
