SEVIS is a Student and Exchange Visitor Identification System that is managed by SEVP (“Student and Exchange Visitor Program”). It is part of the National Security Investigation Division and collects certain information about visitors who are coming to the U.S. as F or M students or J exchange visitors.
What is SEVP?
SEVP is a program that administers the SEVIS. It ensures that all government agencies have essential data about M and F students and J-1 exchange visitors to preserve national security.
What does SEVIS do?
SEVIS is a system that monitors schools and programs, students (on F or M visa), exchange visitors, (on J-1 visa) and their dependents (F-2, M-2, or J-2 visa) who are in the U.S. The SEVIS allows the designated school officials/program sponsors to transmit information about you (and your dependents) throughout your stay in the U.S. so the government agencies have access to this information.
Please also note that SEVIS identifies any violations and they are recorded in the SEVIS system so appropriate action(s) can be taken.
What information is in the SEVIS?
The SEVIS contains information such as:
- Your entry day in the U.S.
- Your exit day from the U.S.
- Your address & any change of address in the U.S.
- Program extension(s)
- Employment notification(s) (e.g. if you are in the U.S. on an OPT)
- Any changes in your program
