What is the NEXUS program?

NEXUS program is one of the Trusted Travel Programs – these programs allow pre-screened travelers to use Global Entry kiosks when entering the U.S. through Canadian pre-clearance airports or expedited NEXUS lanes when crossing the U.S./Canada land border.

What is the main benefit of the NEXUS program?

The main benefit of the NEXUS program is that, when entering the U.S. as a Canadian national, you can use dedicated processing lanes when entering the U.S. via land border and Global Entry kiosks when entering the U.S. via Canadian pre-clearance airports. Additionally, you can also use the TSA Pre Check lanes when flying within the U.S.

What is the fee for the NEXUS card?

The fee for the Nexus card is $50. Children under 18 must have their own NEXUS card but do not need to pay the $50 application fee.

Do I qualify for the NEXUS card?

If you are a Canadian national or a Canadian permanent resident who has been residing in Canada for at least 3 years, you may apply for membership in NEXUS program.

Please note that your NEXUS application may be denied if:

  1. You are inadmissible under the U.S. immigration law (for example, you committed certain crimes),
  2. You have any criminal conviction,
  3. You have pending criminal charges, or
  4. You violated customs or immigration law in any country.

Please note that your NEXUS application can also be denied if you provide any false or incomplete information on your NEXUS application.

Additionally, if you cannot satisfy U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) or the Canada Border Services Agency that you are of a low risk (for any reason), your application can also be denied.

To qualify for membership in the NEXUS program, you must also pass background checks that are conducted by both the U.S. and Canada.

How do I apply?

First, you will have to fill in an online application. The CBP office will review your application and conduct a background check. If everything looks good, you will then be able to schedule an in-person interview at certain locations either in Canada or in the U.S.

If your application is approved, your NEXUS membership will be valid for 5 years.
