If you are Canadian or Mexican national and you have an offer from a U.S. company to work in a profession that is listed on the NAFTA profession list, you could qualify for a TN Visa.

If you are a Canadian national, you may apply for a TN visa at certain CBP-designated U.S. ports of entry, at a United States airport handling international traffic, or at a designated pre-clearance/pre-flight inspection station.

If you are a Mexican national, you will have to apply for a TN visa at a U.S. Consulate abroad.

What documents should I bring with me to the border/to the interview?

You should bring the following documents when applying for a TN admission/TN visa:

  • Your Canadian/Mexican passport
  • Letter from the U.S. employer describing under which TN category you are applying, what you will be doing in the U.S., how long you will stay in the U.S., describing what the U.S. Company does, whether your job will be full-time/part-time, what are your educational qualifications etc. This letter must have the employer’s original signature and no photocopies will be accepted.
  • Your educational degree and transcripts (must be originals)
  • Any relevant licenses

Additionally, if you are a Mexican national, you will need to submit form DS-160, pay the visa fee, and schedule a visa interview. You should bring the DS-160 confirmation page, visa fee payment receipt, and interview confirmation letter on top of the documents listed above. You should also check the website of the Consulate where you will be applying for any additional instructions.

If you are Canadian, you will have to pay 50 USD for the TN visa at the border. If you will be crossing at the land border, you will be further required to pay an additional fee of $6 USD for the paper I-94 form.  You may have to pay these fees in cash, so you should have it handy.
