The Department of Homeland Security will continue to extend Temporary Protected Stats (TPS) designations for El Salvador, Haiti, Honduras, Nepal, Nicaragua, and Sudan to comply with court challenges against DHS’s decision to terminate TPS for these countries. TPS is granted to certain groups of people in the wake of natural disasters, wars, outbreaks of disease, and other catastrophes that would make it difficult for them to return safely to their home countries. Government officials periodically review the program to decide whether to extend it, and most groups have received regular extensions in the past. To learn more about TPS, please click here.
Employment Authorization Documents (EAD) for nationals of these countries will be automatically extended through January 4, 2021. Similarly, I-94 and I-797 will also be extended through January 4, 2021. Both, however, are provided that the TPS beneficiaries properly filed for re-registration during the most recent registration period. Beneficiaries whose applications have been withdrawn or dined are not eligible for automatic extensions.
