Yes, foreign nationals who are Canadian or U.S. permanent residents (“green card holders”) can apply for NEXUS membership, provided they have resided in their country of permanent residency for at least 3 years before applying.
It is important to note that U.S. green card holders are not required to hold a Canadian visa to enter Canada as visitors. As of the date of writing, U.S. green card holders can enter Canada by showing a valid passport from their country of nationality and a valid green card.
On the contrary, Canadian permanent residents (PR) do not get a special exemption. Canadian PRs need a US non-immigrant visa (such as a B-1/B-2 visa) or ESTA in order to enter the United States.
What is NEXUS?
NEXUS is a fast-track processing option at U.S.-Canada air, land, and sea borders for certain individuals deemed “low-risk” by the government. For example, members can access the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) “Pre-Check” lane at participating airports, dedicated vehicle lanes at certain land border crossings, and self-service kiosks at certain airports. This may be a great option for individuals who frequently travel between Canada and the U.S.
How can you qualify for NEXUS?
Applicants can apply for NEXUS membership with a fee of $50 USD, and once approved, an applicant’s membership will be valid for 5 years.
NEXUS eligibility assessments are usually accompanied by a background check and interview, and the following reasons may render an applicant ineligible:
- Being subject to any inadmissibility;
- Having any criminal convictions;
- Having any pending criminal charges; or
- Having violated any customs or immigration law in any country.
In addition to the above factors, a NEXUS application may also be denied if the agency finds that the applicant is not “low-risk” for any reason.
