The TN Visa is a non-immigrant visa open to Canadian and Mexican professionals who have a job offer in a profession that appears on the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (“USMAC”) profession list. The professional must show that they meet the specific educational and/or work experience requirements for that profession. One of the eligible TN occupations is “Technical Publications Writer.”
What education do I need to have to qualify under this category?
To qualify under this category, you need to have either a
- Baccalaureate or Licenciatura Degree, or
- Post-Secondary Diploma or Post-Secondary Certificate, and three years of experience.
What does a Technical Publication Writer do?
The TN regulations don’t list specific job duties for a TN Technical Publications Writer. A good resource to refer to is the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics website that lists some common job duties for Technical Publication Writers. Some of the common duties are for example:
- Preparing instruction manuals, how-to guides, journal articles, and other supporting documents to communicate complex and technical information more easily.
- Developing, gathering, and disseminating technical information through an organization’s communications channels.
- Determine the needs of users of technical documentation
- Work with technical staff to make products and instructions easier to use
- Write or revise supporting content for products
Please note that this would not be a good category to apply under if your Major was English Writing and you wat to work as a writer for a publishing company. This TN job will generally require a degree in a specific field (e.g. Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, IT). For example, in the past we have done a TN For a Biomedical Writer who was writing and editing technical content (such as scientific papers, slide presentations, or symposia materials for clinical audiences) and was ensuring scientific appropriateness and competency of the materials and produced written content.
