Receiving an I-551 Stamp by Mail

A mailbox full of mail

If you are a lawful permanent resident but do not have your green card or if your I-751 or I-90 of N-400 forms has been pending and your extension notice has expired, you may request a temporary I-551 stamp that will serve as evidence of your lawful permanent residency status (this stamp will also allow you to travel internationally).

In the past, you had to make an infopass appointment in your local USCIS field office and visit the office in person to receive this stamp. Recently, USCIS announced that USCIS field offices can now mail an I-94 form with the I-551 stamp & DHS seal and applicant’s photo directly to the applicant and the applicant will not have to attend an in-person appointment.

How do I find out if I need to visit the field office?

You will need to call USCIS customer support line – the customer representative will determine whether you will need to appear for an in person appointment or he will submit a request to a local USCIS field office to mail the I-551 stamp to you. The representative will verify information such as your identity, your physical mailing address, and whether the address can receive a UPS/Fedex mail.

If you have an urgent need, don’t have a usable photo in USCIS system, or your address or identity cannot be verified, you would need to appear for an in person infopass appointment at a local USCIS field office.

If all information above is successfully verified and you can receive a UPS/Fedex mail at you address, USCIS field office may just mail the stamp to you.

This new change is a great news as it will save applicants time attending an infopass appointment (and will also save USCIS resources).
